The Sadness  (2021) aka Kū Bēi aka 哭悲, directed by Rob Jabbaz, Uncut Capelight remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original Chinese theatrical 5.1, and English, Chinese and German subtitles. Note : Some more extreme Asian cinema, this time out of Taiwan, but by a Canadian director, this simply has to be seen to be believed. An ultra-realistic, zombie-adjacent body horror about an outbreak of a virus that turns the infected into ultraviolent sex-crazed sociopaths with no impulse control, it's a hyperkinetic romp that probably used up the entire island's supply of fake blood. If you think the premise sounds a lot like the Crossed comics, that's apparently an acknowledged inspiration, and it definitely doesn't shy away from the violence, depravity, and gore, although it's strangely a bit more coy about actually showing sexual acts, plenty of them are implied and partially shown, but you'd be hard pressed to see a nipple, at least one that's not covered either in prosthetics or gallons of fake blood. If you like gore, this is for you. In particular one early scene in a subway train has the entire set literally swimming in blood, and just keeps going. There's not a lot of plot, but what there is works, and the performances are pretty strong. Jim and Kat are a young couple living in Taipei, and after Jim drops off Kat at the subway station so she can go to work in the morning, weird things start happening in the city. A virus that's apparently been going around causing flu-like symptoms has done what scientists feared, it's mutated into a rabies-like variant that makes the infected conflate anger and sexual pleasure, and outbreaks of extreme violence soon engulf the city, as Kat makes her way from a massacre in the subway, where a shy businessman who tries to initiate conversation with her turns into an axe-wielding sex maniac, to a hospital where there's at least some momentary relief, while Jim has a run-in with the infected in a restaurant before returning home and being attacked by the neighbor. The two desperately try to reconnect across the city in chaos, and things spiral completely out of control. This is a super-clean looking BluRay release, shot on saturated, contrasty, and quite beautiful digital, with a lot of color, both blood red and otherwise. It was not particularly hard to encode, and this bitrate probably gives you pretty much all there is on the original BluRay. 5.1 track sounds good, too bad there's no commentary track or anything.
